Tribute To W.E. McCumber
We
lost a great friend in December, Dr. W.E. "Bill" McCumber. I
first met him in 1988 in Ohio, as I was leaving a pastorate to go
on the road the first time. He and another great, C.Hastings
Smith, were preaching the NW Ohio Campmeeting. I was speaking to
the youth component of that camp and what a thrill it was to hear these
amazing men preach. Dr. McCumber was a great encouragement to
me that week and when we renewed our relationship years later at
the Georgia Campmeeting, he continued to be a friend, mentor and
great encourager.
I had the privilege of working with him in several campmeeting
settings and in the church he so faithfully pastored in
Gainesville, Georgia. It was our privilege to visit with him and
Doris, his lovely wife, in their home. There will never be one
quite like Bro. Bill. He was an author, teacher, leader,
pastor, preacher, evangelist, editor, and most of all, a
wonderful servant of Jesus! He preached for over 69 years.
It was an honor to know and work with him. His wisdom and
insights were profound. His economy of words was amazing. He
could say more in 15 minutes than anyone I have ever heard. I
loved his dry wit and razor sharp mind. I admired his great
love for Doris, the bride of his youth. Most of all we all
admired his great love for Jesus. Heaven looks even better now
knowing he is waiting for us there.
